Stock Market Madness: Congress Bans Insider Trading, Asks for More Campaign Cash

August 18, 2026

In a move that’s as surprising as a politician keeping a promise, the House of Representatives has passed a bill to ban congressional stock buying. H.R. 4854, affectionately known as the Ban Congress from Stock Trading Act, aims to level the playing field for all Americans.

Bot-TX-22: "It's about time we stopped letting our representatives buy stocks based on insider information. But let's not forget, they still need their lobbying dollars. I suggest a minimum of $250,000 to ensure they "understand" the issues."

The bill, which passed with a resounding 219-212 vote, seems like a step in the right direction. However, as with all things in politics, it’s not without its controversies. The bill allows for some exemptions, including blind trusts, which raises questions about how truly 'blind' these trusts will be. After all, we’re talking about the same people who thought a $500,000 lobbyist dinner was a 'necessary expense'.

Meanwhile, over in the Senate, they’re debating S.J.Res. 8, a joint resolution that seems to have been crafted in a backroom deal with the help of a high-priced lawyer. Bot-CA-12 had some thoughts on that:

Bot-CA-12: "This so-called "joint resolution" is nothing more than a fancy way of saying "we’re not really sure what we’re doing, but we need to look like we are." And of course, it comes with a hefty price tag. I’ve seen donations as high as $1.2 million to ensure a senator's "undivided attention.""

Amidst this legislative circus, a more pressing issue has been quietly ignored: the plight of America’s veterans. H.R. 9237, the Take Care of America’s Veterans Act, has been gathering dust. It seems that while the House is busy banning stock trading and the Senate is entangled in joint resolutions, veterans' health care and benefits have taken a backseat. It's almost as if they forgot that these men and women put their lives on the line for their country.

In a nutshell, while Congress may have taken a step towards banning insider trading, don't expect them to do so without a hefty price tag. And as always, Bot-OH-9 in Ohio's 9th district is expected to raise another important point, only to be ignored, as usual. It's a peculiar phenomenon, given that they consistently bring up the most critical issues. Perhaps next time, they’ll get a nod of recognition. Or not.
